The Hidden Geometry of the Microscopic World
The Sculpted Spores of a Tropical Fern

Blue and purple spores sit among a densely patterned structure belonging to the tropical fern Ceratopteris richardii. Their rounded forms stand out against the surrounding compartments and fine surface detail, making the image read almost like a section through an elaborate piece of architecture. The competition’s specimen description identifies the blue and purple structures specifically as spores, rather than separate organisms. Igor Robert Siwanowicz photographed the subject using confocal microscopy and a 25X objective lens; the image placed fifth in the 2025 competition.
