The Hidden Geometry of the Microscopic World
A Neuron’s Radiating Network

A bright central region gives way to a finely spreading network, its many extensions becoming fainter as they reach into the black background. The specimen consists of sensory neurons derived from induced pluripotent stem cells, labelled to reveal tubulin and actin. The photograph makes their intricate organization visible without reducing it to a simple diagram. Stella Whittaker combined confocal microscopy, fluorescence and image stacking with a 10X objective lens for the seventh-place image, balancing a clear central form with an extraordinary field of branching detail.
