The Hidden Geometry of the Microscopic World
Pollen, Growth and an Uninvited Guest

Rounded mallow pollen grains appear alongside a mesh of finer structures, creating a meeting of circles, spikes and thread-like lines. There is more happening here than a decorative arrangement: the official specimen description records pollen germinating on a stigma while a filamentous fungus parasitizes it. The image brings those overlapping processes into the same frame rather than isolating the pollen as a static object. Igor Robert Siwanowicz used confocal microscopy with a 40X objective lens for this eighth-place photograph in the 2025 competition.
