The Hidden Geometry of the Microscopic World
A Fungus in Red and Amber

Glossy rounded forms and a pale textured ground give this close view the appearance of a strange mineral landscape. The subject is biological: Talaromyces purpureogenus, a fungus identified in the competition record for its red, diffused pigment. The contrast between jewel-like highlights and the softer surrounding texture supplies the image’s strong sense of depth. Wim van Egmond made the ninth-place entry using image stacking with a 10X objective lens, bringing a small fungal world into a richly detailed and tightly composed field.
