Volcanic Landscapes Beyond Earth
Arsia Mons Above the Clouds | Mars

A volcanic summit breaks through a blanket of water-ice clouds in this view taken before dawn on 2 May 2025. Instead of looking straight down, NASA’s Odyssey spacecraft turned its camera towards the Martian horizon.
Arsia Mons is the southernmost of the three major Tharsis Montes volcanoes. Its broad summit rises above clouds created as air travels up the mountain and cools. The image has been brightened, stretched for contrast and processed to reduce instrument noise; its greenish atmospheric haze is not a view of Earth.
