Volcanic Landscapes Beyond Earth
A Radar-Built View of Maat Mons | Venus

Maat Mons appears on the horizon beyond fractured plains and overlapping lava flows. Venus’ thick cloud cover prevents an ordinary orbital photograph of this landscape, so Magellan used radar to map the surface beneath it.
This particular view, NASA image PIA00106, combines radar observations and elevation measurements into a computer-generated perspective. Its colours are simulated, and the vertical scale is exaggerated ten times to emphasise relief. It is a scientific reconstruction of a real landscape, not a camera view from the surface or an AI illustration.
Computer-generated radar/topography perspective; simulated colour; height exaggerated 10×
