Japanese Gardens Where Every View Is Designed
Murin-an | Kyoto

Murin-an brings a more naturalistic character to the designed landscape. Completed in 1896 for statesman Yamagata Aritomo, it was shaped by gardener Ogawa Jihei using water supplied through the Lake Biwa canal system. Streams and planting lead the eye towards Kyoto’s Higashiyama hills. The result feels expansive without needing a monumental scale: near and distant greenery work together, and the passage of water gives the scene a rhythm beyond its still photograph.
