Japanese Gardens Where Every View Is Designed
Konchiin | Kyoto

Konchiin’s Crane and Turtle Garden turns arrangements of stone and planting into a miniature world. Its two symbolic islands suggest the facing creatures without becoming literal animal sculptures. The temple’s central hall supplies an important viewing position, giving the garden something of a staged composition. Pale open ground separates the forms so their differences remain legible, while the trees beyond the immediate arrangement deepen the space rather than simply closing it off.
