Japan’s Natural Wonders Beyond the Familiar View
Shiodawara Cliffs | Stone With Its Own Pattern

On Ikitsuki Island in Nagasaki Prefecture, the Shiodawara Cliffs turn the coastline into a wall of repeated vertical shapes. Seen together, the rock columns have a textured, almost honeycomb-like rhythm, interrupted by vegetation and the irregular edge of the sea. They belong to the island scenery of Saikai National Park. Here the attraction is not a building or a lookout platform, but the way an exposed rock face can appear simultaneously ordered and worn by the elements.
