Japan’s Natural Wonders Beyond the Familiar View
Naruto Strait | The Sea Draws Spirals

Between Tokushima and Awaji Island, moving water becomes the main event. Tides passing through the narrow Naruto Strait produce whirlpools that form, tighten and dissolve rather than remaining fixed in place. From a boat they feel close and energetic; from the Onaruto Bridge area their patterns become easier to read across the water. This is a landscape with a timetable set by the tides, so the famous swirling forms are a changing phenomenon, not a permanent feature of every view.
