Japan’s Natural Wonders Beyond the Familiar View
Zao’s Snow Monsters | Winter Rewrites the Trees

The bulky white figures on the slopes of Zao are trees transformed by winter, not sculptures installed on the mountain. Snow and wind build up around the alpine trees until branches disappear beneath the formations known as juhyo. Their rounded, irregular silhouettes make the slope look populated by a strange crowd. They are also temporary: a particular combination of cold and snowfall creates the scene, and warmer weather eventually returns each apparent creature to an ordinary tree.
